Performance physiology is the science of how physical exercise changes the structure and function of the body. Sports physiologists need a good understanding of the physiological demands of sporting performance as well as detailed knowledge of how the body responds and adapts when subjected to acute and chronic physical stress. This knowledge is used to develop customised training routines for elite athletes to optimise physical performance.

The Sport Wales physiologists work with high performance athletes and their coaches, as part of a multidisciplinary support team, to provide practical and relevant information and advice in a range of settings from the research laboratory, in the field, at training and pre-competition camps and at competitive events.

Areas of work

  • Physiological testing conducted either in a sport science laboratory or in the field, according to the needs of the athletes
  • Training prescription, periodisation and monitoring performed in collaboration with coaches and athletes
  • Ongoing physiological monitoring of the athlete’s response to training programmes and competition
  • Providing objective data to inform decision-making by coaches and athletes
  • Coach and athlete education for optimised physiological performance
  • Additional interventions aimed at improving the athlete's ability to cope with adverse climates, altitude and long-haul travel.

Our on-site sports science laboratory

Housed within the Sport Wales Institute High Performance Area, our BASES (British Association of Sport and Exercise Science) accredited laboratory boasts a wide range of equipment for physiological and metabolic assessment within a multisport environment.

Our track record

All members of the Sport Wales Physiology Team are accredited or working towards accreditation as chartered scientist with BASES (Bases Chartered Scientist). All Sport Wales Institute practitioners hold up to date UKAD advisor certificates.

Working holistically
