Lawn bowls has swept the village of Llanfairpwll - and it’s the younger generation leading the way.

Thanks to National Lottery funding through Sport Wales, Clwb Bowlio Llanfairpwll has become a community hub for fun, enjoyment and friendships.

Bowls is for all ages

To introduce lawn bowls to the next generation, the Anglesey-based club launched the ‘Academi’ - a programme made for young people to try the sport. Since then, junior players have been bowled over by how much excitement the game gives them.

So much so, the club applied for funding to help the sport reach new heights in the local community and give their young members the best possible experience.

Bowls may not be as fashionable as football or other popular sports, but I would encourage any young person to give it a go. It’s lots of fun, allowed me to meet new people, and I have gone on to represent Wales’ youth team.

National Lottery support

In 2019, Clwb Bowlio Llanfairpwll received £1,500 of National Lottery funding through Sport Wales. The money went towards ‘small bowls for small hands’ - equipment designed to help young players learn the game.

It was a small grant, but has made a huge difference, providing the spark that has transformed the club over the last six years. It has become a community hub where juniors can develop their skills, build friendships and fall in love with bowls.

Not only are the young players thriving at the ‘Academi’, but many are also now enjoying playing the sport in various leagues across the region and beyond.

“The National Lottery funding has contributed massively to the success of the ‘Academi’ at Llanfairpwll.

“This season we will make even more use of the ‘small bowls’ and introduce more sessions for junior players to get involved. It seems that bowling in the village is taking over from football as the leading sport.” - Alun Jones, Clwb Bowlio Llanfairpwll Chairperson

Future of bowls on the island

“Our future plan is simple. Continue the good work to reap further success and introduce the sport to a younger generation of children.” - Alun Jones, Clwb Bowlio Llanfairpwll Chairperson

With the Academi growing and young players taking to the greens, the future of bowls on Anglesey is looking bright.

Got an idea to get more young people playing sport? Like Clwb Bowlio Llanfairpwll, your club could apply to the Be Active Wales Fund to make it happen.
