  4. World Cup to Welsh Clubs: Building a Better Game for Women

As Wales’ women push forward in the Rugby World Cup, clubs are stepping up to grow the female game at home.

We know that women and girls want safe, welcoming spaces. But right now, only about half of women in Wales feel there are enough sports facilities in their area.

But help is at hand. Clubs can apply to A Place for Sport – Crowdfunder to raise money and improve facilities – including those built to create better environments for women.

Many rugby clubs in Wales have done just that.

No more grubby shower blocks. No more makeshift women’s toilets. No more tired, uninviting changing rooms. By crowdfunding, clubs are giving our women and girls the spaces they deserve…

New women’s toilets at Treorchy RFC

When Treorchy RFC set up its women’s team two years ago, interest was huge. Players were keen and numbers grew quickly.

But there was one, big problem. The women’s toilets were in desperate need of a renovation.

That’s when Treorchy RFC turned to A Place for Sport – Crowdfunder. The club raised £6,000 through the campaign, including £3,600 from Sport Wales.

The club is so supportive of the women’s team and understood that we not only needed to improve the toilets, but we needed to make it a more welcoming environment. The committee asked us what we wanted and how it should look. Even simple things like adding sanitary bins make a big impact. We feel the club is really making an effort to show we belong.

Birchgrove RFC aiming to raise funds for new changing room and toilets

Swansea club, Birchgrove RFC, is hoping to cross the line with its ongoing Crowdfunding campaign. With a target of £15,000, it aims to create a changing room and toilets for women and girls.

It boasts a thriving junior section and caters for girls up to the age of 11, before they progress to the Swansea Eagles Girls Hub.

And the club – keen to welcome more girls into the fold – know their toilets and changing rooms aren’t up to scratch.

It’s important to us that we are as female friendly as possible. We want girls to start their rugby journey with us so they need to feel welcome. It’s crucial that our facilities are suitable and inviting.

The new facilities won’t just support Birchgrove’s own players. They will also allow the club to host women’s and girls’ regional games, helping even more players take part.

So far, the club has raised just under £6,000. With more support, Birchgrove RFC can touch down on its target and give women and girls the facilities they deserve.
