A Place for Sport - Crowdfunder

A Place For Sport is a partnership between Sport Wales and Crowdfunder to support community clubs and activities to raise money for facility improvements.

What is A Place For Sport?

A Place For Sport offers clubs a great opportunity to engage with their community and raise money. If clubs or community organisations can raise money towards a targeted goal, Sport Wales will pledge funds up to 50% towards the given project.

On the Crowdfunder website, people pledge money to support the cause or idea. In return, the person donating money can also get a reward, which can be a product, benefit, or service.

WHAT WILL WE SUPPORT?

Sport Wales match funding scheme is for not-for-profit clubs and community groups looking to raise money for ‘off-field’ improvements. For example:

  • Changing rooms
  • Clubhouse renovations
  • Improved kitchen facilities
  • Bike racks and storage
  • Lifts and ramps for better disability access
  • New fencing

The above examples are all ‘off-field’ improvements. If you’re looking for funding for ideas to improve ‘on-field’ participation at your club, check out our Be Active Wales Fund.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE?

To be eligible for A Place For Sport Crowdfunding, your organisation must:

  • Be a not-for-profit sports club or community organisation.
  • Take place in Wales and be primarily for Welsh residents.
  • Funding for projects or facilities that has not yet started.
  • Demonstrate how the project will increase access to physical activity in your community.

How to Apply?

Complete an Expression of Interest form with Sport Wales and if your project meets the criteria for A Place for Sport funding, you will be invited to set up your Crowdfunder page.

Here's a handy step-by-step guide to help you apply.

HOW DOES CROWDFUNDER WORK?

Clubs and organisations can set up a page on the Crowdfunder website, which asks people to pledge money to the cause or idea. These ideas would benefit the local community by improving facilities.

Crowdfunder provide support and advice, including a coach to guide you through the process where appropriate.

Your Crowdfunder project is assessed by Sport Wales, who can decide what level of match-funding you’ll be eligible for based on the information you’ve provided. If the Crowdfunder page has reached certain criteria, Sport Wales will match funds.

How is funding awarded?

If projects reach 25% of their target goal with support from a minimum number of donors Sport Wales will pledge between 30% and 50% of the total project, depending on the project’s potential to tackle inequalities within the community:

  • 30%: If a project is likely to gain support on Crowdfunder.
  • 40%: If a project demonstrates how it intends to support tackling inequalities.
  • 50%: If a project is based in one of the most deprived areas of Wales, as identified by Welsh Index of Multiple Deprivation data.

Please note that if the project fails to raise the remaining money within 8 weeks of receiving match-fundings the funding will be cancelled.

You can read the full details of eligible criteria on Crowdfunder.

What happens after i apply?

We will review your form and aim to make a decision within 2 working days.
