Safeguarding and Protecting Children Workshops

Sport Wales can offer online and face-to-face UK Coaching Safeguarding and Protecting Children Workshops for clubs, governing bodies and other organisations to develop their coaches and volunteer workforce.

This page provides details on what the course entails and useful information on how clubs and organisations can book their own Safeguarding Courses. There will be occasions throughout the year where coaches can book individual spaces on courses, these will be advertised nearer the time.

Safeguarding and Protecting Children Workshop

This interactive face-to-face/online workshop will help you recognise and respond to concerns a child may be experiencing, or be at risk of experiencing, harm, neglect, or abuse.

You will learn the importance of person-centred care and taking an individualised approach to your coaching practice, that puts the child or young person at the heart of every session.

UK Coaching works in partnership with the NSPCC and CPSU to regularly review and develop the course content and materials to ensure the learning content, guidance and delivery is current.

  • Updated in April 2022, the guidance and scenarios provided will prompt you to reflect on what it means to be a child today, and to consider the impact and implications on your coaching practice.
  • You will learn techniques to help you develop a child-centred philosophy that positively contributes to ensuring safe practice and creating a safe environment that meets the needs and protects the welfare of all children.

Through interactive scenarios and discussions with people from different sports and activities, you will have the opportunity explore the consequences of those decisions in a safe and supportive environment, helping to increase your confidence to deal with safeguarding issues effectively and counteract the latest threats to emerge that could impact on the physical or mental health of children in modern Britain.

You will be able to:

  • identify and recognise good coaching practice and the implications for your coaching
  • refresh your knowledge around recognising safeguarding issues, what to do, and just as importantly, what not to do
  • explore your values and feelings in relation to child abuse, and recognise their potential impact on your response
  • take appropriate action if concerns about a child arise
  • learn from and pick the brains of our expert tutors, all of whom have lived Safeguarding experience – such as club welfare officers, schoolteachers, or police officers.

Anyone under the age of 18 who attends a Safeguarding and Protecting Children Course must be accompanied by an adult.

If you have a group of young leaders between the ages of 16-18 years old, a whole course can be arranged without the need for an accompanying adult for each learner.

The course has been awarded 2 CPD points by the Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity (CIMSPA).
