DEVELOPING A SPECIFIC TRAVEL RISK ASSESSMENT

The sport is required to write a specific travel risk assessment for each planned trip. The risk assessment document needs account for all the different scenarios that could occur whilst abroad. Below is a guide for the main considerations when writing your risk assessment document with some useful links:

  • The Covid Medical Officer should be involved in the travel planning process and agree to any specific travel risk assessment documents and travel protocols.
  • It is recommended that athletes / support staff that have underlying health issues develop individual risk assessment and mitigation plans.
  • The Covid Medical Officer will need to have the capacity to provide remote support to any athletes or staff members travelling should they require it.
  • Guidance for UK based elite sport organisations and individuals travelling to competition or training outside the UK can be found here.
  • Advice on foreign travel (including the latest information on coronavirus, safety and security, entry requirements and travel warnings) should be followed and periodically reviewed prior to travel to ensure that the latest COVID-19 related information is appropriately incorporate into travel plans.
  • Consider what will happen if a travel warning is issued by the Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office (FCDO ).
  • Check the current level of COVID-19 infections in the country where you are planning to travel here.
  • Guidance for travel will vary across the COVID-19 alert levels. There are currently 4 alert levels in Wales, the Elite Core group are permitted to continue training throughout all 4 alert levels.
  • Elite athletes and sports will need special dispensation to travel. Travel dispensations are approved via the National Sport Group (NSG).
  • Consider the risk of travel vs benefit. Are there alternative domestic competitions you could attend?
  • Consider all competitionvs camp risks and procedures when planning.
