Welsh Sport Tributes for Rhodri Morgan

Figures from across Welsh sport have paid tribute to the former sport loving First Minister ahead of his funeral today (Wednesday May 31).

Just a few months after Rt Hon Rhodri Morgan took to the stage at the Wales Sport Awards, the world of Welsh sport has been keen to remember a man who championed sport.

'Rhodri was a life-long supporter of all Welsh sport, but a true fan of athletics in Wales.

A former athlete himself and member of Roath Harriers, Rhodri supported many athletics events in Wales and will be fondly remembered by the athletics family, both as a Patron of Welsh Athletics, but also for his infectious enthusiasm for the sport.

We have lost a true friend and he will be sadly missed.'

Matt Newman, CEO, Welsh Athletics

'We'll remember Rhodri as a passionate and knowledgeable supporter of disability and Paralympic sport, someone who cared deeply about the positive influences and impact it could have on the lives of people.'

Jon Morgan, Executive Director, Disability Sport Wales

'He was an inspiring leader and a passionate champion of Welsh sport, with immense knowledge and respect for our sporting icons. As well as a fan of the sport, Rhodri was a keen cyclist and advocate of living an active lifestyle, embracing all that Wales has to offer. He will be truly missed by the whole sporting community in Wales.'

Anne Adams-King, CEO, Welsh Cycling

'I have heard it said many a time, that there will never be another…… and on this occasion I feel I have to concur.  Rhodri was a living sporting encyclopaedia with personal analysis and opinion to boot. Whether it was the split times at the Welsh Athletics finals or reminiscing over a try or a goal, at the City or the Millennium Stadium, a conversation with Rhodri was never short. He had the ability to engage and speak to people without status and a generosity of spirit that was contagious, for this and so so much more he will be missed across the sporting family.'

Sarah Powell, CEO, Sport Wales
