Deprivation

The information being displayed below are either significant differences between the demographic data, or significant changes since the previous wave. If you are looking for a more in-depth analysis, please see factsheets for wave 8 and 9.

  • Respondents from the 30% most deprived areas [most deprived areas] were significantly less likely to walk for leisure than respondents from than those from mid-deprivation area [mid-deprivation areas] and the 30% least deprived areas [least deprived areas] (56% [most deprived] vs. 68% [mid-deprived] vs. 66% [least deprived]).
  • Those from the least deprived areas were significantly more likely to walk for leisure with someone else, compared to those from the most deprived areas (40% vs. 45% vs. 49%).
  • There are large disparities in confidence levels between respondents from mid-deprivation and least deprived areas compared to those from the most deprived areas for using gym/health and fitness suites. Whilst 42% of those from mid-deprivation areas are confident in using them, 39% of those from the most deprived areas are, compared to 33% of those from the least deprived areas are.
  • Those from mid-deprivation and the least deprived areas are significantly more likely to be confident using parks for informal play, walking, running etc. than those from the most deprived areas (63% vs. 73% vs. 70%).
  • 64% of respondents from the most deprived areas say that they have the ability to be physically active, this is in comparison to 75% of respondents from mid-deprivation areas and 73% of respondents from the least deprived areas.
  • Under half of respondents (48%) from the most deprived areas say that they find exercise enjoyable and satisfying, this in comparison to 59% from mid-deprivation areas and 63% from the least deprived areas.
  • Respondents from the least deprived areas are also significantly more likely to say that regular exercise is important to them, in comparison to those from the most deprived areas (63% vs. 66% vs. 70%).
  • 30% of respondents from the most deprived areas agree that they worry about leaving their house to take part in physical activity, whilst 17% of respondents in mid-deprivation areas and the least deprived areas agreed.
